How to Register Your Business in Queens, NY: Step-by-Step for New Entrepreneurs

Starting a business is exciting — but the paperwork can feel overwhelming. At the Queens Black Chamber of Commerce (QBCC), we want to make that part easier for you. Whether you’re launching a boutique, food truck, online store, or consulting firm, here’s how to get legally registered in Queens, NY.



Step 1: Choose Your Business Structure



Decide what type of business you’re forming:


  • Sole Proprietorship (easiest to start, no legal separation between you and the business)

  • LLC (Limited Liability Company) (protects personal assets, flexible for most small businesses)

  • Corporation (Inc.) (better for larger businesses, investors, or multiple shareholders)



Tip: Most small businesses start as an LLC for legal protection and simplicity.




Step 2: Pick a Business Name

Step 3: Register with New York State



  • LLCs and Corporations: File through the NYS Division of Corporations https://www.dos.ny.gov/corps/

  • Sole Proprietors: Register your business name (a “DBA”) with the Queens County Clerk in Jamaica, NY.



Step 4: Apply for an EIN (Tax ID)



This is like a Social Security Number for your business. It’s free and you can apply online at:

Step 5: Register for NYC Taxes & Permits



Depending on what your business does, you may need:


  • A Certificate of Authority (to collect sales tax) from NYS

  • Permits from NYC’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (e.g., if you own a salon, cleaning company, or restaurant)

  • A food license, sidewalk vending permit, or special health certifications

Step 6: Open a Business Bank Account


Keep your finances separate. Use your EIN and Articles of Organization to open a business checking account.
